TRASH IS NOT OUR HOUSE
my TRASH - your trash - our trash!!
Currently, there are 137 landfills in operation across Malaysia including 21 sanitary landfills, where the pits are protected from leakage, 174 have already been closed. However, 126 non-sanitary landfills are currently releasing methane gas and leachate into the air and soil without proper treatment. Additionally, there are numerous illegal dumpsites for domestic waste and scheduled waste (hazardous waste such as e-waste and chemical waste). These issues have been worsened by imported waste in recent years.
Malaysia's landfills are filling to capacity, putting the country in danger of running out of space for the disposal of solid waste by 2050. With an average of about 38,000 metric tonnes of solid waste sent to more than 100 landfills in Malaysia daily, the authorities and operators are actively seeking solutions for a sustainable waste disposal system.
Alam Flora Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Azahari Zainal Abidin said waste collected from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur alone, with about 2,500 metric tonnes of solid waste produced daily, could pile up to the height of the Petronas Twin Towers in only one week. And the amount of waste would continue to increase in tandem with population growth, he said.
As citizens, we play a crucial role in addressing the waste management crisis. Here are some ways we can contribute:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Reduce: Minimize waste by choosing products with less packaging and avoiding single-use items.
- Reuse: Find new uses for items instead of discarding them. For example, repurpose containers and donate old clothes.
- Recycle: Properly sort and dispose of recyclable materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal.
Composting
- Compost: Turn organic waste like food scraps and yard waste into compost, which can enrich soil and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
Support Sustainable Practices
- Buy Sustainable Products: Choose products made from recycled materials or those that are environmentally friendly.
- Support Local Initiatives: Participate in or support community clean-up events and recycling programs.
Educate and Advocate
- Raise Awareness: Educate others about the importance of waste management and sustainable practices.
- Advocate for Change: Support policies and initiatives that promote better waste management and environmental protection.
